From the Principal's Corner 12-2-19

We have a very busy December at Roosevelt! This Friday alone, we have Raider Pride Day, a special story teller assembly, and our Roosevelt Choir is singing at the capitol at 1:00pm. Don’t forget to support the CRAFT FAIR on Thursday and Friday at 3:30pm in the gym. Next week don’t miss “Colors of the Season” performed by our first, second, and third graders at 2:00pm on Thursday the 12th and Friday the 13th.

Roosevelt parents overwhelmingly agree that going outside on rainy days is perfectly acceptable. Make sure to watch the weather. If it looks like rain, have your child wear their rain gear. Students who are dressed appropriately will go outside for some fresh air!

This Friday is Kids Night Out (Parents Night Off!) Use this time to get ahead on holiday shopping or enjoy a night out with friends. Proceeds will benefit our 6th grade MOSS program. Mr Mellen and Mrs Stewart will be here to play with kids in the gym, make craft projects, and watch a movie, so send your little ones over. They will be thoroughly entertained!

We want your opinion!

We are considering allowing appropriately dressed students to go outside during recess on rainy days.  We know going outside for fresh air and a brain break during the school day can greatly benefit students, but It has been our practice to keep them inside when it is raining, even if they have rain attire. We would like your opinion on this new recess consideration.  If students have rain boots, rain coats and umbrellas, do you think it is appropriate for them to be outside in the rain? Please email Mrs Severson with your opinions. rebecca.severson@boiseschools.org

Time to Dress Warm

It’s time to put the shorts away!  Beginning next Monday, Nov. 4th, students need to wear pants/tights/leggins etc. in order to stay warm during recess.  We often find students who come to school in shorts during these cold temperatures are miserable at recess. Please have your students dressed for the weather, including bringing a jacket or coat.  We will allow shorts again after spring break.

Lost and Found

We will be donating lost and found items next Friday November 8th.  Please check one more time for missing items before we send them to a donation site.

Clothing Donations Needed

Our health office is looking for very specific clothing items.  If you have the following that you could donate, please bring them to the office:

  • long pants size 5-10, pull up sweatpants preferred
  • long sleeve shirts size 5-10
  • hats/gloves

 Conferences

Parent teacher conferences are October 23rd and 24th. Your childs’ teacher will be contacting you soon to schedule a conference.  We are required to have 100% attendance at these conferences, so please make every effort to attend. If you cannot make it during our conference time, teachers will work with you to reschedule.

Student Council

This year at Roosevelt we are changing Student Council.  We have many students at Roosevelt who exhibit exceptional leadership qualities.  Therefore, the adult advisory committee decided to make student leadership at our school more inclusive and less exclusive.  Instead of limiting any student, we want everyone interested to have an opportunity to be a leader. Students in the 4th through 6th grade will be able to sign up for leadership opportunities in which they will organize and lead Roosevelt events.  Each student who chooses to participate will be included, but no one is required to sign up. Students will sign up to help with events such as Kindness Week, Monster Mash, Music programs, Monday announcements, babysitting night and more. Prior to the sign up day, students will have the opportunity to consult with you, so you are aware of the time commitment.  Sign ups will happen during the first week of October. Please direct any questions to Mrs Severson.  Thanks for your continued support.

Every Space is a Learning Place

You may have heard that students at Roosevelt are walking quietly in the hallways with their hands folded or tucked in their pockets. Our teachers noticed last year that they could not have learning groups in the hallways because it was so noisy.  In an effort to use every space as a learning place, we are asking students to be very responsible about how they walk in the hallways. This is part of the Roosevelt Way. Our goal is to create an environment throughout the entire school where students can learn.

Cell Phones in School

Please help us!  Students should not be calling you during the school day from their cell phone or smart watch.  If you receive a call from your child during school hours, please make sure they are using a school phone, and that their teacher or the office is aware.  We are responsible for them during the day, and therefore need to know when issues arise. If you have specific concerns about this policy, please contact Mrs Severson. Thank you.

Music

We need volunteers for various upcoming music events and activities.  Please sign up to help using this link: Roosevelt Music Volunteer Sign Up

A note from the new art teacher

Art is off to a great start this year, and I am so grateful to be part of the Roosevelt team! We introduced our September Artist of the Month, Marie Severin, and began exploring art elements of texture, line, value, and shape in the students' sketchbooks through studies, or practice exercises. We will continue to deepen the understanding and application of art elements and principles throughout the first semester. My goal is for the students to start looking at the world around them through an artistic lens and get comfortable applying art elements to their artwork using pencil and paper before moving into more complex media like mosaic, ceramics, and print-making in the second semester. Hello Parents!

This will be a very exciting year at Roosevelt.

We have many new teachers and a few changes. Some may already know that Mrs. Cadwell and Mrs. Fitchner decided to move from kindergarten to 2nd grade. They are a great team, and I know students will feel lucky to be their students again. Mrs. Everson moved to fourth grade, and she is looking forward to repeating with some of her former students as well. Our new kindergarten team, Mrs. Titmus and Mrs. Beaudry, come to us with loads of experience and enthusiasm for kindergarten. We also welcome Mrs. Marlene Dodd in 3rd grade, Mrs. Katie O’Neil in 5th grade, Mr. Thomas Mellen in 6th grade and Ms. Tahirih Cahill as our art teacher. It is an exciting time to be a Raider!

One area of the school that is not taking a summer break is the outdoor classroom. A big thank you to the volunteers who have spent time weeding and maintaining the outdoor classroom this summer: Mrs. May and her son Ryan; Mrs. Cadwell; Mrs. Titmus (new Kindergarten teacher); Kim Poulson and her mother Sandy; Asher Spencer; Ethan Emmons; Jessica Pazdan; Nathan Sutter; Dawn Nistal; and Nova Duft. Also thank you to Mike Ayres, school custodian, who has helped the clean-up effort as well. THANK YOU!!
